Ending Poverty in Ontario: Building Capacity and Organizing for Change

September 12, 2010

Ending Poverty Project (2008-2010)

The Ending Poverty Project was initiated by ISAC and Ontario Campaign 2000 to work with low-income people in 10 communities to share ideas for what’s needed to end poverty in Ontario and to build broad public support for tackling poverty both locally and across the province.

The two-year project, which began in January 2008, involved community partners in Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, Owen Sound and Windsor. In Toronto, the project involved youth, people with disabilities, single moms, and racialized communities.

Read about low-income people’s ideas for ending poverty in ISAC and Campaign 2000’s report from community workshops held in 2009:  Solutions Start with Us: Voices of Low-Income People in Ontario.

The report and an accompanying cover letter were sent to members of the government’s Cabinet Committee on Poverty Reduction, the Results Table which is overseeing the government’s implementation of the poverty reduction strategy, and key opposition MPPs.

Read about media coverage of the report in Owen Sound and Sault Ste. Marie.

Read each community’s project profile: Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Windsor, youth (Toronto), people with disabilities (Toronto), single moms (Toronto), and racialized communities (Toronto).

Funding for the Ending Poverty Project was generously provided by the George C. Metcalf Charitable Foundation.

Ending Poverty Workshop

ISAC and Ontario Campaign 2000 developed a hands-on, interactive workshop that was used to engage communities in discussions about Ontario’s poverty reduction strategy and what they could do to lobby the government and build public support for reducing poverty.

Train-the-trainer workshops were held in Ottawa, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Picton and Toronto in spring 2008 to familiarize groups interested in using the workshop in their communities. These workshops are no longer being offered, but a detailed Facilitator’s Manual (see below) can be downloaded for free and used to deliver the workshop in your community.

The guide also includes activities and tools that can be adapted for community organizing, focus groups, strategic planning and team building. All materials can be freely used and adapted, with credit to the Income Security Advocacy Centre and Ontario Campaign 2000.

Funding for the Ending Poverty Workshop was generously provided by the George C. Metcalf Charitable Foundation and Legal Aid Ontario.
