Social Assistance Rate changes with OCB 2014

July 17, 2014

OW & ODSP Rates and the Ontario Child Benefit

We have prepared a new rates sheet that shows changes in OW and ODSP rates and the Ontario Child Benefit. The new rates will be in effect between July / August 2014 and Sept / Oct 2014.

Starting this month, the maximum Ontario Child Benefit will go up from $101 to $109 per month. At the same time, OW and ODSP Basic Needs rates will go down for single parents on OW with children under 18 and people on ODSP with children between 13 and 17.

This change is happening because the provincial government is moving benefits for children out of social assistance and into the Ontario Child Benefit. The reductions will be made on the July 31 ODSP cheque and the August 1 OW cheque.

People in these circumstances will not lose money as a result of these changes – the total amount of money from social assistance and the Ontario Child Benefit combined will not go down.

Check our new rates sheet here for details on these changes.

We will continue to advocate with government to end the practice of “rate restructuring” so that people with children on OW and ODSP see the full benefit of increases to the Ontario Child Benefit.

The 2014 Budget is currently being debated in the Ontario Legislature and will pass shortly. As a result, OW and ODSP rates will increase starting on the September 30 ODSP cheque and the October 1 OW cheque. See our response to the Budget for brief information about these increases.

We will circulate an updated rates sheet that will detail the new increased rates as soon as it is available.
