ISAC staff members Claudia Calabro and Asif Khan recently co-authored a piece published on the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives‘ website entitled Time for a real poverty reduction strategy in Ontario.
In it, Claudia and Asif argue that it was a mistake for the provincial government to focus the 2020-2025 Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) on employment metrics and moving clients off of social assistance. They also point out that despite the province’s significant investments in Integrated Employment Services meant to deliver “more efficient and streamlined” support for job seekers, the province still did not meet its own employment targets outlined in the PRS.
Ontario will soon develop a new five-year strategy to help guide the fight against poverty in the province, which means we have an opportunity to get it right this time around. Claudia and Asif share three ideas on what a real poverty reduction strategy should look like in 2025 and beyond: read the full article at this link to find out what it will take to create a truly helpful PRS that will pull thousands of Ontarians out of poverty for good.
